Box of rock

Pros:
  • Super easy to build
  • Parts are easily accessible (minus the C5K pot, that can be tricky, Das Musikding is your best bet)
  • Small footprint board
  • Sounds (to my ears) killer, really love the sound of this pedal.

Cons:
  • The crackle on the gain.  Just more annoying than anything else, but I can live with it.
  • Not so much a fault with the unit but, I found it difficult to obtain a C5K pot w/ knurled shaft for the gain control.  Not such a big deal if you're using grub screw type knobs, which I had to in the end. (read "the secret life of pots", must get round to that)

The build went smooth and this bad boy worked first time, straight off the bat.
I'm really, really pleased with the sound of this unit, the tone has a great range (to my ears at least), volume is on tap and just enough gain to suit any style of playing.  It lends your amp that helping hand to just give it that extra bit of 'beans' in the volume & drive dept.  Lower the gain all the way, boot the volume up and you've got a very decent booster for solos etc.

Excuse the messy build, this thing was a throw together in order to get it running as soon as possible.  Notice the mosfets I used, substituted the BS170 for 2N7000's, their pin out is the reverse of the ivlark build notes & were only soldered in once I knew they were right, a practice I encourage everybody to do, you just never know.  Notice the 100uf cap at the top, I should have left a little more 'lead' enabling me to fold it over into the case.  You'll also notice there's no battery terminated at the 'ring' on the input jack, this had to be sacrificed due to the size of the enclosure I used.

All parts sourced from either Farnell, Rapid Online or Das Musikding in the U.K. & Germany respectively. I am in no way affiliated with any of these companies, they're just a very good source for standard and some esoteric pedal parts.
